I love this idea and I wish I had been at the conference. It sounds wonderful. The only difficulty I can see from the standpoint of logistics is that my university will only pay for travel to conferences if you have had a paper accepted or if you have formally been invited to present a talk. We have to provide a copy of the invitation and an abstract of the talk. Of course the registration being by donation is an enormous plus, but the cost of travel and accommodations would put it out of reach for me all the same. I'm not sure how to manage that, other than for the organizers of such conferences to issue "presenter" invitations to all participants accepted to the conference somehow. And if participants did create some kind of abstract of what they might be interested in talking about it might even prepare them for participating in the conversations at the conference.
