Thanks for this post - i'm thinking about these matters quite a bit at the moment - not in the least because i'm in my third country in four years and i'm not sure where i'll be next.

I wondered what you think of Academia.edu ? I use it even though i have a website, my own blog and another collaborative blog. Their SEO is extremely good meaning by using that platform i can pretty much guarantee that I know what people will see if they search for my name - sometimes when others have written about me or responded to my research that's been ranked higher than my own websites for a while. My Academia.edu profile reduces that risk - and it has much more of an opportunity for interaction - i've been directly contacted by no less than half a dozen researchers at other institutions just this year as a consequence of that profile.
Thanks so much for this post - i've got a lot more to think about.

My company has just launched a web-based portfolio site at www.apojigo.com. Apojigo makes it extremely easy to build a rich, multi-media portfolio, and it's tabbed interface is very intuitive for viewers navigating the portfolio. Oh, and it's free. Please take a look and let me know what you think!

There is a facebook like site for academics: academia.edu. I am ambivalent yet as to its functionality and the plus/minus of it, as it seems to still be fairly new and mostly populated by international scholars. But hey, its free, I filled out a page, it is a nice way to have my (limited) scholarly work available to the public. Easy url too.

Hello Rachael,

I touch on some aspects of developing an academic profile (e.g. ResearcherID.com) is the following presentation I gave to a graduate-level professional skills course:

Slides:
http://tinyurl.com/cp7sjn

Narrated on my podcast:
http://tinyurl.com/42ryfj

It seems that there are tons of websites now that allow you to create a profile, then by linking these profiles together you can begin to establish a net-based presence. I use Scribd.com a lot. Drop me a line if you wish to discuss this further.

For sure, in certain disciplines (or maybe in all disciplines?), grad school applicants with their own web sites have a pretty decent advantage over those who don't. So, I agree with your position. You say, "I think it is better to develop your own profile, your own set of pages and develop the digital literacy to control your own data." Can you suggest a few quick steps or resources to help develop this literacy, especially for people like me, who equate web development with brain surgery? I still can't figure out the difference between a host, a server, and a domain… and I have tried!

Thanks for mentioning Interfolio, David. We're excited to be offering the new online portfolio. As we work with the academic community, our goal is to create a platform that fits their needs, respects their document rights and helps ease the process of digital adoption, while still offering people the chance to create a truly unique web presence. While we're still in beta right now, I'd invite anyone who is interested in testing it out to contact me and we can set up a trial account.
