You might want to take a look at GroupTweet (http://grouptweet.com/). It would work very well in setting up a classroom grouptweet to keep everyone organized in getting each others twitts.

I took a look,

That looks great!

One of the hard things to teach is the nature of Network Theory but try http://www.crazybob.org/twubble/ to get a first class example of how it works.
The reach at two degrees of separation is huge.
It puts mass media and network media into context

I've been looking into academic uses for Twitter as well. I particularly like the idea of using it as a mini-blog to share links to interesting articles with a terse comment (though I haven't enough academics following me to start doing that too much).

Now, if I can get my thesis supervisor on it, he'll be able to keep closer tabs on my work. On second thought...

I think that this article did a great job rationalizing this program but I don't see how this is any different than having instant messaging or using any other basic computer program or wiki. I just don't see the great benefit of twitter.

nibblepig-
Stay tuned for more. But, the class I used for this last time was a Computer Mediated Communication class, essentially a class about how networked forms of writing change our society. So, the connection was pretty transparent. But since there were so many questions about this I am writing a follow-up post or two.

Hi Dave,

How exactly are you using twitter for an assignment? I tried to direct message you on twitter but it wouldn't let me, so I have posted here instead.

Although I think that twitter is blocked where I work.. but I can always try to change that!

In the <a href="http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/magazine/15-07/st_thompson" rel="nofollow">"Wired" article you point to</a>, the author cites: <B>"You have to do it — and, more important, do it with friends. (Monitoring the lives of total strangers is fun but doesn't have the same addictive effect.)"</B> Here is where I personally am having an issue - I'm outisde the 'typical' user age group for twitter (18-27). None of my closest friends understand it - nor care to. So I'll continue to work at fostering new friendships with those who DO!

Coincidentally, I wrote about using Twitter in the classroom about six weeks ago. (I honestly just discovered your site, good stuff all around). Last week, I wrote about and made a video about using Pownce in the classroom as it does everything Twitter does and then some. You can read that review at http://freetech4teachers.blogspot.com/2008/01/free-technology-for-teachers-using.html
I actually tried my ideas in the classroom yesterday (I teach 9th grade World Studies) and it worked great!

You can follow my Pownce at http://pownce.com/rbyrnetech/

You don't have to be a Teacher to use these techniques when tweeting, but you can act like one.
As I see it, Twitter is only a time "waster" if you make it one. If you are following the right people, you can ask a question and have it answered five different ways with real world experience that you can fall back on.

Do You Follow Me?
