Dave: Nicely done. I too am using Twitter in the classroom at the college level. I have asked my marketing majors to use it and am finding a great deal of what you stated above to be true -- but only for those students who really are willing to jump in. For those who are jumping in, they are creating amazing connections and connecting with big players in the marketing field -- something they wouldn't have been able to do before.

My biggest challenge is getting the students to be willing to play with and explore emerging technology tools so they can then decide how they can (and more importantly, how they should) be used in the Marketing context.

I'm often surprised by those students who are 18 - 22 who just won't do it. They refuse to try and state that they won't need to use these tools when they work. They aren't much different than many of my colleagues (smile). So, once again proof that age has nothing to do with technology acceptance.

I have followed you on twitter. Feel free to follow me @ejyoung67

I'm on the academic job market, and I like Twitter b/c it is another aspect of New Media that I can bring to the classroom.

Thank you so much for your insights.
I'm currently building an online community for my master's thesis to foster communication (among other things) between lecturers and students in the field of information science. I'm keen to integrate microblogging to make communication more personal. Twitter is a great tool to achieve that and other important things as well, as you've outlined in your blog post.

If you want to clarify the benefits of Twitter to somebody who doesn't get the gist of this hilarious tool, you could tell them to check out a tiny presentation I've given on a webmonday this week called <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/SMartens/get-the-most-out-of-twitter" rel="nofollow">"Get the most out of Twitter"</a>: - it was inspired by the great presentation <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/minxuan/how-twitter-changed-my-life-presentation" rel="nofollow"> "How Twitter changed my Life"</a>, although the latter title is a bit too much in my opinion ;-)

Keep up the great work!

Your post has some practical advice and recommended academic applications that would be well worth sharing with us at http://www.twitterforteachers.com. I hope you’ll consider joining us, and perhaps adding some of your ideas (like this list of practical ideas) to the project.

All the best!

I was leery about twitter at first, as well, but have since seen some great uses of it. Using twitter has allowed me to further advance my knowledge as a tech integrator in the school I teach, as well as start new conversations that I otherwise would not have been able to have. Some of the issues that I have seen on twitter have turned into podcasts, new workshops, advanced in the classroom, as well as an overall expansion of knowledge. I don't know what I'd do without twitter now.

Excellent list of uses for Twitter in the classroom! I wish I saw this *before* starting down the path of creating an assignment for my course. I had students use Twitter for 14 days and I recently blogged about the experience here: http://digitalmindsblogger.blogspot.com/. I'd love your reaction and thoughts. Thanks.

I'm an adjunct professor and use Twitter to have my students follow my activities for a week at work. The end result is a paper describing what they learned and their reactions to my workload.
