I Can Hardly Wait
I realize I am a Devon Think groupie, but the news that a new version is in the work for this year has me anxiously awaiting the release. In my opinion it is the best, “brain in a box” software out there. My largest complaint with Devon is the interface (it is rather dated an un-Mac like), but never fear reworking the UI is one of the upgrades.

I also love Devon Think! But you’re right, the interface looks dated and I would love to see better support for tags. It would be wonderful if you could have a tagcloud for instance to quickly navigate your documents in a totally different way!

I can’t wait…I hope they upgrade the text editor a bit, I’d like to use it for my paper writing.

My biggest gripe about Devon, and I generally love the thing, is that crucial data as to how you file PDFs (e.g., in a nested hierarchy) is not used by search engine. IOW, if you think you can train the search engine to better emulate how you think about your documents, you are mistaken. Nor, for that matter, does it use the title you give the PDF as especially valuable. The only info the search engine uses is the text in the document. You would think that weighting the file structure and title would greatly increase it’s efficiency. Frankly, its a waste of some particularly critical info.

I really wanted to like DevonThink, but I found it really clunky and gave up on it. However, I’m going to look forward to the release date for the upgrade and keep my fingers crossed.
