Those who follow this blog know that I am seriously intrigued by Twitter, and have frequently written about its academic uses.
Enter Edmodo, Twitter for educators. Edmodo is a private microblogging service. I generally think one of the values of twitter is its public nature, being able to connect to people beyond your usual milieu. That having been said I can see the use in having a private channel particularly for public K-12 education where “internet-fear” constricts the use of public platforms.
Thanks for posting about Edmodo. We do not aim to be a twitter killer and I agree with value of twitter having things publicly available. We definitely built with k-12 in mind when we were design the privacy model. Teachers/Professor’s that do want to post items public also have the ability to do so. Every post gets a public button and a teacher can cherry pick what they want to send to the public time line if they want to. Best of both worlds

Looks cool anyways, but not sure what it offers that Twitter doesn’t besides the privacy.
Wess, thanks for your comment. We are not a replacement for twitter. A lot of educators would love to use twitter in their classroom but they have concerns over their students privacy. We have built a safe environment that teachers can communicate with their students and collobarate.

As a teacher, the privacy features offered by edmodo over twitter are vital for a k-12 environment. I will be keen to see what my Year 12′s think of it when school resumes after the holidays (ah spring has sprung down here in Australia)
