This Blog is Moving

Okay the virtual address of this blog is not moving but my real world (first life) address is. I have recently accepted a post doc position at Georgia Tech University. As of August 1st I will be composing from the rather hot state of Georgia as opposed to upstate New York. So, the blog isn’t actually moving just me. If anyone has thoughts on where to live in Atlanta I am open to suggestions.

I lived in Atlanta while working on my Master’s and Doctorate at Emory. Tke a look around Little Five Points, ther are some inexpensive 1 - 2 bedroom apt just west of Little Five, check around Euclid, Oakdale and McClendon - you might also want to check out East Atlanta. If nothing else, take an evening to sit outside at the Brewhouse Cafe, have a pint and people watch.

I live in Atlanta too, and I used to go to Georgia Tech. There are many okay places to live, so it really depends on what you want and what your budget is. Here are the areas to consider:

midtown area - very close to georgia tech, basically you’d be living in houses with a bunch of other grad students… but this area can be kind of depressing too

little 5 points / inman park area - this is where i live, a cute grungy area that’s slowly becoming more commercialized, but it’s still ok

virginia highlands area - hip neighborhood but also a bit on the yuppy side, can be expensive

decatur - a little far from georgia tech, but a cute little neighborhood with its own little scene

cabbagetown / grant park / kirkwood - these are cheaper and only slightly further from inman park area and some of the houses are really old and cute here

east atlanta - another hip little up and coming neighborhood

let me know if you have any questions or need any help

All that you need to know about Tech and Atlanta is that Tech is near the Varsity. You should celebrate your move with one of their “Yankee Dogs” (so named because of their “yellow streak” of mustard). Also has free wifi. :) Enjoy. Ok, so it wasn’t advice on where to live, but it’s the best advice I have.

Having several degrees from Ga Tech, I would say that Atlanta has grown into a mess. A wonderful, fun, exotic mess, dear to my heart kind of mess, but a mess. Economies of the road are very meaningful, especially this early in your career.

Consider living either very very close to Tech to make everything work related very functional. Or, on the contrary, consider living way out so that the lower costs of life and the really pretty parts of Greater Atlanta come into focus. If possible, live in town, and get a really good friend with a lake house!

And at all times, remember, at Tech, we’re helluva engineers, and we drink our whiskey clear!
