[...] Once again, Dr. David Parry has agreed to share his tech wisdom with Adjunct Advice. Rather than going for a broad sense of technology, this interview focuses exclusively on the effective and efficient use of RSS feeds. As this interview demonstrates, RSS is much easier to use and more powerful when you organize your feeds. In addition to this interview, I suggest you read David’s own article about RSS feeds here. [...]

Thank you, thank you! Finally, someone has explained feeds so I have a clue what they're about. I'm trying to get clued into tech & teaching (English comp) and your site has been VERY helpful. Thank you! I'm serious, this should be required reading for the technically uninitiated like me.

Kind regards,
Gregory

Tim,
Good question. I would say Safari, or a built in RSS reader is like using webmail over a mail application, it works especially if you are not handling a lot of information. For example the three paneled layout is key for me in being able to run through all of the headlines. Also these dedicated readers have ways to tag and flag articles, sort etc. Again key when it comes to handling large amounts, and i working off line. And if you are on a Mac Newsfire and NetNewsWire work so seemlessly with whatever browser you choose (you can choose to have the articles open in Safari) that the programs almost work as one. But I am also working both sides of the fence here, since you will notice that I am encouraging students to use Flock. But Flock comes the closest to a dedicated RSS reader, and offers other features for the students, so it is a bit of a tradeoff.

What benefits does a stand-alone reader, like NetNewsWire, offer over the built in RSS abilities of Safari?
