I need help! I had my laptop serviced, standard, and having trouble sending and receiving emails. When I go it back every email I receive comes as an attachment. This is a real pain. It takes 3 clicks, at least, to bring it up, 3 more to put it back, and impossible to reply to containing the original message, i.e., the attachment doesn't go along with it. The guy who serviced it take no reponsibility and has no clue. I thought it might be in Symantec, even though I had had it long before, emailed them but they didn't help me. I would really appreciate it if someone has a solution or knows someone else who does.

MANY THANKS!

I keep all my non-list mail in my inbox, and I'm not about to stop working that way. I try to deal with every message as I read it, and I flag stuff that needs my further attention. Three smart mailboxes -- new personal mail, new list mail, and flagged messages -- help me know what I need to deal with next. I also have a smart mailbox for "all mail." To each his own. -Y.

Yes, subfolders can be created inn a POP3 account. Click on the + sign at the bottom left of Mail's main window, this will create a new folder. Name the folder. After the folder is created click on it and drag it to whatever folder you want. It will be placed within that folder as a subfolder.

It has to be an IMAP account, a POP3 account will not let you.

so i got the act-on plug-in, and i created a bunch of folders, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to make the rules properly in order to move mail in with simply a couple key strokes. now i've made a mess and ended up with over 1,000 messages in my needs response folder!?!?

Jim,
Thanks for the kind words and please email me if you have any tips for others, as I would hope to share others hacks, not just mine.

I was working a program for Summerbirdge, not teaching, but a college retreat for some of the students. So it wasn't all summer just directing a residential college visit for them. That folder was how I kept all the emails from that program archived. When I am working a short term project that will generate a lot of email traffic I make a folder for it to group them together.

Who does? I used to have 6000 emails in my inbox--everything from July 2003 (when I got my Mac and my .Mac account) until, well, Merlin posted about this in the link above. Yes, that was about four years worth.

I wanted to pop in here and say that I am _really glad_ to have found this blog. I teach online courses, and just the "make an assignment out of your students emailing you" hack from yesterday will save me SO MUCH GRIEF. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

One last thing: when I saw the screenshot of your email, I saw "Summerbridge." Is that referring to the national program where college and high school aged kids design and teach their own classes? I was a Summerbridge teacher back in 1998 out in Locust Valley, NY--it was one of the best teaching experiences I have ever had.
